During the spring semester, students will implement their ideas from their thesis proposals into their buildings. Below is the mechanical depth proposal as well as the two breadth studies for Hunter's Point South School.
 

Mechanical Depth

The existing 3 VAV AHU's will be replaced with a dedicated outdoor air system with an enthalpy wheel. This will be done in order to save on AHU's and duct costs. Though heat recovery is required for a DOAS, the addition of an enthalpy wheel will help cut energy costs and add some heat recovery to a building that currently has none. Terminal units for these rooms will also be replaced with fan-powered induction units. This will allow for better comfort control and ensure that the correct amount of ventillation air is supplied to each space. Lastly, a new chilled water system shall be designed to supply the two different types of chilled water needed for the AHU's/DOAS and cooling coils of the fan-powered induction units.

 

Breadth 1 - Electrical

With some movement of the CAV AHU's and the removal of the VAV AHU's, enough roof space should be cleared to allow room for a solar photovoltaic system to be built on the roof. This system will create clean energy and help spread sustainable concepts to the students. The design and integration of tying a solar system into the existing electrical system of Hunter's Point South School will be included in this breadth. The sizing of the inverter(s) and breaker(s) will be calculated as well the feeders. An economic analysis on the payback period and energy production of the panels shall be performed.

 

Breadth 2 - Structural

With the moving around of the AHU's and the addition of the solar panels, a structural analysis will be performed on the roof. The current roof shall be tested to see if it can support the new loads. Calculations on the roof deck, beams, girders, and columns will be done for strength and deflection. These calculations wil be performed by hand or done using RAM or SAP.

 

MAE Coure Relation

The addition of fan-powered induction units will alter the mixing of air in the spaces. A CFD analysis (using knowledge gained from AE559) will be performed in order to determine if any problematic mixing (ex. drafts or dead zones) will occur within the spaces. This will help determine how good the thermal comfort is in these zones.
